Because JBSA-Fort Sam Houston sits just northeast of downtown San Antonio, you can live minutes from post. Terrell Hills, Alamo Heights and historic Government Hill are about 5 to 15 minutes away. Windcrest, Live Oak and Converse offer more home for the money at 10 to 25 minutes. Stone Oak and Schertz-Cibolo add newer homes at 20 to 30 minutes. Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) is on post, so shift schedules matter when you choose.

Every JBSA location, including JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, uses the San Antonio Military Housing Area (TX285). These are the 2026 monthly rates, effective January 1, 2026.

BAMC shift workers: test the drive
If you work nights or 12-hour shifts, drive your route at shift change. A 10-minute difference matters more after a long call.
